Pronounced ju.
As defined in the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to carrying soil in a basket. Another definition is to collect or gather. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: gathering it in heaps. The commentary notes that those building walls gather and collect soil, fill it into baskets, and cast it into the wooden frames.

The appearance of being long. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: possessing long thorns. In the same work, it is also written: possessing long horns. The commentary describes this as the appearance of horns.

Equivalent to the character for save or rescue. It means to stop or to protect. In the History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), biography of Dong Zhongshu: intent to rescue those overflowing and support those in decline.
