In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is derived from xū and rùn, read the same as jùn. The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines the character as steep and towering. The Jade Chapters (Yupian) defines it as dangerously steep. The Jade Chapters also notes it is sometimes written in the form jùn. In the Rhapsody on the Imperial Garden (Shanglin Fu) by Sima Xiangru, there is a line: traversing steep paths and rushing toward danger. In the Book of Han (Hanshu), it is written using the character jùn. The Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) records this as the name of a pavilion located in Fengyi. In the Collected Rhymes, it is noted as being the same as the character jùn. In the Sea of Characters (Pianhai), it is also written in a variant form pronounced jùn.
