Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan), Year 2 of Duke Zhao: People who died of hunger on the roads could be seen everywhere.
Du Annotation: Those who die of starvation are called jìn.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes: There is still someone to bury him.
The current text is written as jìn.
Commentary notes state: It refers to a grave on the side of the road. Another theory says it refers to burial.
Also used interchangeably with jìn.
History of the Former Han (Qianhan), Hymns for the Suburban Sacrifices: The spirits hover, as if in exile, hoping to be close to the spirits in order to manifest sincerity.
Annotation: Meng Kang says: jìn, pronounced the same as jìn. Shigu says: It means the spirits hover and do not depart, thus allowing me to have an audience (jìn), hoping to draw near and rely upon them to express sincerity and make it manifest.
