In the Classic of History (Shangshu), specifically the Canon of Shun (Shundian): To divide the twelve mountains and dredge the rivers.
It is also used for anything deep.
According to the Erya, a dictionary of synonyms (Erya), it means dark and deep.
In the Classic of Poetry (Shijing), in the Odes of Shang (Shangsong): Wise and profound was the Shang dynasty.
It is also the name of a prefecture.
According to the Expanded Record of Geography (Guangyuji), Xun County in Daming Prefecture was an ancient city of Wei, known as Liyang during the Han dynasty, and Xun Prefecture during the Five Dynasties period.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is the same as the character for dredge (jùn).
Textual research: In the Classic of History (Shangshu), regarding the Canon of Yao (Yaodian): To divide the twelve mountains and dredge the rivers. We have corrected the reference from the Canon of Shun to the Canon of Yao in accordance with the original text.
