According to the Explanation of Words and Phrases (Shuowen Jiezi), it is the kingfisher. In the Literary Expositor (Erya), in the chapter interpreting birds, it is noted as the ju-dove or kingfisher. Guo Pu notes that it is a type of eagle. In the region east of the Yangtze River, it is called the osprey, which likes to dwell near river islands and feed on fish. It is sometimes written in a variant form (ju). In the Book of Odes (Shijing), in the Zhou Nan section, it is mentioned as the guan-guan kingfisher. It also denotes an official title. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), in the seventeenth year of Duke Zhao, it is mentioned that the Kingfisher Clan served as the ministers of war.
