Collected Rhymes (Jiyun): Pronounced jiao (third tone). Another name for the white fish. Garden of Stories (Shuoyuan): When Fu Zijian served as the magistrate of Shanfu, Yang Zhou said to him: The fish that bites the hook and swallows the bait immediately is the Yang jiao fish; its flesh is thin and the taste is poor. The fish that stays at a distance, appearing as if it wants to eat and yet as if it does not, is the bream; its flesh is thick and the taste is delicious. Fu Zijian said: Understood. Before he even reached Shanfu, the carriages and horses of the officials coming to welcome him were already crowding the road. Fu Zijian said: Send them away; these are the Yang jiao fish that Yang Zhou spoke of. Also in Collected Rhymes (Jiyun): Pronounced jiao (first tone). The meaning is the same.
