According to the Correct Rhymes (Zhèngyùn), it is pronounced zǐliǎo qiè. The Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì) says: to toil. It is composed of the Strength (lì) radical and the cháo phonetic. In the Zuo Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals (Zuǒzhuàn), it says: "How can one exhaust the people?" Also, according to the Tang Rhyme (Tángyùn), Collected Rhymes (Jíyùn), Rhyme Compendium (Yùnhuì), and Correct Rhymes (Zhèngyùn), it is pronounced chújiāo qiè, with the sound cháo.
