Broad Rimes (Guangyun), Collected Rimes (Jiyun), Rime Collection (Yunhui), and Correct Rimes (Zhengyun) define the pronunciation as jiàng.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) states it is a deep red color.
Explanation of Names (Shiming) states: Jiang means craft. Dyeing it is difficult to obtain the color, so obtaining the color is considered a craft.
Commentary on the Quick Enrollment (Jijiupian zhu) states: In ancient times, jiang was called xun.
Zuo Si, Ode to the Capital of Wu (Wu Du Fu): Silk ribbons, purple, and deep red. The commentary states: Jiang refers to the jiang plant. It originates in Linhe Commandery and can be used for dyeing.
Also a place name. Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), 26th Year of Duke Zhuang: Shi Wei built the city of Jiang. The commentary states: Jiang was the capital of the Jin state, today Jiangyi County in Pingyang.
Also a river name. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Annals of Wei: The Jiang River can be used to irrigate Pingyang. The commentary states: The Jiang River has its source in the Jiang Mountains.
