In the School Sayings of Confucius (Kongzi Jiayu), it is recorded: When Confucius was in office for three months, those who sold lambs and suckling pigs did not inflate their prices. In the Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), Biography of Zhang Rang, it is noted: Those who were to be appointed to official posts all negotiated their prices at the Western Garden. In ancient times, this was also written as a variant form (jiǎ), which is pronounced gǔ, with the tone shifted to the falling tone, carrying the same meaning.
