Book of Rites (Liji): The gatekeeper is a lowly person who guards the gate.
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli): The gatekeeper is in charge of guarding the prohibitions of the inner palace gates of the King.
Commentary: This refers to the gatekeeper being tasked with guarding the inner palace gates of the King.
Zhengzitong: Whenever officials or commoners have grievances and go to the palace gate to complain, it is called knocking on the gate.
Zheng Yun: A palace eunuch.
Book of Changes (Yijing): Acts as a palace eunuch.
Commentary: This refers to his duty of restricting people.
