According to Zhengzitong, this character is the same as hun (dusk/marriage). In the Tang Dynasty version of the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), this character was written with a portion of the character for commoner (min) omitted, while the Xu Xuan version omits a portion of the character for clan (di). Chao Buzhi states: Because the Tang Dynasty required the avoidance of the character for commoner (min), it was changed to the clan (shi) radical. It is therefore clear that this form is not a vulgar character. The Essence (Jingyun) treats this form as the word for dusk and the standard form as the word for marriage. This likely occurred because the author did not investigate that the Tang Dynasty changed the character to the clan (shi) radical for the purpose of naming taboo, subsequently leading to the erroneous division into two separate characters.
