According to the Explaining and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it describes the state of being still dark. According to the Jade Chapter (Yupian), it means dawn or the beginning of light.
In the History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Record of the Suburban Sacrifices, the term appears. The commentary by Yan Shigu states: It refers to the time when the sun is still obscured, meaning the time before it is bright.
In the Poem on Deep Communication (Youtong Fu) by Ban Gu: I awake in the dim light of dawn and look up in thought. The commentary states: The dim light of dawn refers to the first light of the morning.
Pronounced wu (entering tone). The meaning is the same.
