Pronounced hu. According to the Explaining and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to frighten. The Jade Chapters (Yupian) defines it as a loud sound. The Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) describes opening the mouth to call out. The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Spring Officials section, records that the cock-man calls out the arrival of dawn at night to awaken the officials. The Explanation of Texts (Shiwen) states that hu is pronounced hu. It is also used as a surname. It is identical to the character hu. The Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Su Qin, mentions that to the south there is the Hutuo River and the Yi River. Some write it in a variant form. It is also pronounced hu (fourth tone). The meaning is the same. According to the Mencius (Mengzi), it refers to giving something while shouting. The commentary states that hu er refers to the appearance of shouting and urging someone. The original character is written as hu. Sometimes it is written as hu.
