Pronounced hu. According to the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun) it is pronounced hu. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) it is pronounced hong. According to the Erya: Explaining Fish, it is recorded as a danghu. The commentary states that this is a type of sea fish. Its appearance resembles a bream but with larger scales, and its meat is fatty and delicious but contains many fine bones. In the present day, the people of the Jiangdong region refer to the largest ones, measuring three feet in length, as danghu. The Classified Dictionary (Leipian) mentions another account that this fish only appears at certain times of the year and is regarded by the people of the Wu region as a delicacy, which is the fish known today as the hu fish.
