Jade Chapters (Yupian), Tang Rhymes (Tangyun): Pronounced huan. A type of violet plant.
Book of Rites (Liji), Inner Morality (Neize): Violets, huan, elm, and shepherd’s purse; dried rabbit meat, soaked in glutinous water to make it slippery. Commentary: Use violets in winter and huan in summer.
Broad Refinements (Guangya): Summer huan and autumn violets are as slippery as flour.
History of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), Biography of Ma Rong: Mushroom and shepherd's purse, violets and huan. Nowadays, the character for violet is commonly used.
Textual research: In the Book of Rites (Liji), Inner Morality (Neize), the text regarding violets, huan, elm, and dried rabbit meat to make it slippery has been corrected from the original text by changing the character for rabbit to the correct variant.
