Wei Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Tongue (shé) 舙 Kangxi strokes: 18 Page 1008, Entry 03 According to the Collection of Characters (Zihui), this character is identical to the character for speech (hua). As recorded in the Jade Chapter (Yupian), the ancient form of the character for speech was originally written in this shape. Additionally, the Collection of Conversations (Tan hui) states that it is the ancient form of the character for whispering or murmuring (qi). The Refinement of the Six Writings (Liushu jingyun) interprets it as: to plot to frame others through slanderous speech. This character shape does not imitate the appearance of bustling activity, but rather mimics the repetition of speech, thus using three overlapping tongue characters to signify that words change frequently and are inconsistent.
