Hai Collection, Lower Volume. Radical: Bird (niǎo). Kangxi strokes: 20. Page 1494, Entry 30. Yupian: Pronounced hu. Jiyun and Yunhui: Pronounced hu. A pelican. Zhuangzi, External Things: Fish do not fear the net, yet they fear the pelican. Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): On Mt. Luqi there is no grass or wood, only sand and stone. The sand water originates here and flows south into the Cen River. Within the water are many pelican birds, whose shapes are like mandarin ducks, with feet like those of a human, and whose cries sound as if they are calling their own names. Annotation: The present-day pelican has feet very similar to those of a human.
