Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Characters): To be slow or late. Composed of the step radical, the small component, and the go component; this represents being behind. Xu Kai states: The small component signifies stumbling.

Book of Odes (Shijing): It did not begin with me, it did not end with me.
