Commentary on the Materia Medica (Bencao Shiming): Abalone is what the Book of Rites (Liji) refers to as dried fish.
Also, Book of Rites (Liji), Inner Quarters: Violet, daylily, elm, and spindle tree, prepared as dried, then washed in a liquid decoction to make them slippery.
Commentary: The newborn growth is referred to as the start of the plant. Dried means dehydrated.
