Tang Rhymes (Tangyun) and other rhyme dictionaries state the pronunciation is xun.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to a deep bank. Another definition is a water’s edge. Sometimes written as a variant form (tan).
Also the name of a river in Langya. The Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing Zhu) states: The Xun River originates from Jugong Mountain.
Also Xunyang, a place name, which belonged to Lujiang Commandery during the Han dynasty. Guo Pu in his Rhapsody on the Yangtze (Jiang Fu) writes: Flowing into nine branches at Xunyang.
Also the name of a prefecture. In the Han dynasty, it was part of Guilin Commandery; the Tang dynasty established Xun Prefecture. The Record of Universal Geography (Guangyu Ji) notes: It is now Xun Prefecture.
