You Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Wine (yǒu) Kangxi Strokes: 17 Page 1286, Entry 21 Pronounced hǎi (third tone). Defined in the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) as minced meat condiment. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Great Odes (Daya), it refers to offering minced meat condiment and meat juices. The Commentary states that this term refers to meat juices. In the Book of Rites (Liji), Songs of Propriety (Quli), it is advised not to drink the minced meat condiment. The Commentary explains that this refers to minced meat condiment; since the condiment should be salty, a guest drinking it would imply it is too watery. In the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Officers of Heaven (Tianguan), the Officer of Minced Condiments manages the food in four types of vessels, including meat juice condiment, snail condiment, clam condiment, giant clam and ant egg condiment, rabbit meat condiment, fish condiment, and goose meat condiment. The Annotation states: whenever making meat condiment, one must first dry the meat, then mince it, mix it with millet, yeast, and salt, soak it in fine wine, coat it, and place it in a jar, where it will be ready after one hundred days. Zheng Sinong says: that which contains no bones is called this. Also refers to cooking. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Lu Zhonglian, it is written: I shall cause the King of Qin to boil the King of Liang. In the History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Biographical Account of Ban Gu, it is written: However, he was ultimately cast into a cauldron to be executed, suffering the punishment of boiling and dismemberment. Additionally, in the Rhyme Supplement (Yunbu), it rhymes with the sound of "huli," and is pronounced like xǐ (third tone). In the Verses of Chu (Chuci), Nine Chapters (Jiuzhang), it is written: Loyalty is not necessarily employed, and the worthy are not necessarily adopted. Wu Zixu encountered disaster, and Bi Gan was minced into meat condiment.
