According to the Sound Dictionary of Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced gou (rising tone).
The Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) records: There is an animal in the north called gouquan that eats humans.
Also pronounced ju (level tone). Gouyang refers to ants.
The Extensive Refinements (Boya) records: Ants are called gouxian in the regions of Qi and Lu, and are called yuangou in the regions of Liang and Yi.
Guo Pu notes: Pronounced ju (level tone).
Also pronounced qu (rising tone). The pupa of the original silkworm is called kuigou.
According to the Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), pronounced hou (rising tone). The meaning is the same as ant. Sometimes also written in a variant form.
