In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Xiaoya section, it is written: There are gou trees on the southern mountain. Lu Ji, in his Commentary on Trees and Plants (Caomu Shu), states: The gou tree grows as tall and large as a white poplar; its fruit is several inches long and tastes sweet like sugar; in the region of Shu, it is used to make a paste. It is also written in a variant form (ju). Pronounced ji (falling tone). The meaning is the same. Pronounced gou. In the Erya, specifically the Interpretation of Trees (Shi Mu), it is written: gou-ji. The commentary states: It is the present-day gou.
