According to the Tang Dynasty Rhymes (Tangyun), the Rhyme Collection (Jiyun), the Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), the pronunciation of this character is the same as gui. Jade Chapters (Yupian) defines the term as a small box. The Tribute of Yu (Yu Gong) section of the Book of Documents (Shujing) mentions wrapped and bundled offerings of three-ribbed rush. The Commentary (Shu) explains gui as winding or bundling. The Records of the Officials (Baiguan Zhi) in the History of the Tang Dynasty (Tangshu) records that in the second year of the Chuigong era of Empress Wu Zetian, four bronze boxes were cast and placed in the imperial court. Correct Character Mastery (Zhengzitong) records that during the Tianbao era, because the pronunciation of gui was identical to the word for ghost (gui), the name was changed to the Office of Presentation (Xianyuan).
