According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to the use of money or wealth to seek or offer a reward to obtain something. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), it is written: He intended to go west and use wealth to seek help from the Qin state. In the History of the Former Han (Qianhanshu), it is written: Therefore, he used a large amount of gold to offer a reward for the capture of Chen Xi’s generals. The commentary by Yan Shigu states: Gou means to establish a reward to recruit or solicit. It is also the name of a type of plant. According to the Er Ya, which explains plants, gou is the same as the shanglou plant. The commentary by She Ren states: Gou is another name for the shanglou plant. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also pronounced gou, with the same meaning.
