According to the Guangyun and Jiyun, it is pronounced gan. It is the name of a fish, commonly known as the tuo fish. In the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), it is noted that the Jian River contains many gan fish. The commentary states that another name for it is the yellow-cheeked fish. According to the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao), the gan fish is a type of fish also known as the widower fish. The character gan implies a sense of daring. The character indicates the nature of the fish, as it feeds incessantly. Because of its habit of swimming alone, it is also called the widower fish. The Jiyun notes that it is sometimes written in the simplified variant form.
