According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen), the character gan is sometimes written as the character lin (phonetic component jin) as a variant form. It refers to water seeping into the seams of a boat. Another interpretation defines it as the name of a river. Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced yan (falling tone). The meaning is the same. It is also pronounced cen (level tone). It refers to a pond. Furthermore, the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing) records that Mount Hao contains many lin stones. Guo Pu notes that the character lin is sometimes pronounced jin (level tone). The specific details are unclear. The Commentary on the Classic of Water (Shuijingzhu) cites the text as using the character ling.
