Pronounced feng.
Jade Chapters (Yupian): A type of animal. It has a tail; if it is struck lightly, it dies, but if it is exposed to the wind, it revives.
Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): A feng mother; its shape resembles an ape. When it encounters a person, it bows its head. If struck lightly, it dies, but if it gains wind, it revives. From Miscellaneous Records of Strange Things (Yiwuzhi).
Correct Meanings (Zhengzitong): A feng-li; its shape resembles an ape but is smaller. Its eyes are red, its tail is so short it appears as if it has no tail, and its body is hairless. From its nose to its tail runs a blue-colored strip of fur, about an inch wide. When it sees people, it appears as if ashamed, bending its neck to bow. If one strikes it, it dies; if one directs its mouth toward the wind, it revives after a while. Originally written as wind (feng).
Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang (Youyang Zazu): Another name is jie.
