In Tangyun (Tángyùn), Jiyun (Jíyùn), Yunhui (Yùnhuì), and Zhengyun (Zhèngyùn), pronounced dī. In Shuowen (Shuōwén), it means embankment. In Yupian (Yùpiān), it means bridge or limit. In Guangyun (Guǎngyùn), it means to guard against or block, the same as the character 堤 (a variant character tí). In Zhengyun (Zhèngyùn), it means bank or shore. In Erya (Ěryǎ), "Chapter on Structures", "A dī is called liáng." The commentary states: "That is, a bridge." In Book of Rites (Lǐjì), "Monthly Ordinances", "Repair and strengthen dikes and defenses." In Records of the Grand Historian (Shǐjì), "Treatise on Sacrifices", "Recently, the Yellow River overflowed its banks, and the dikes and corvée labor never ceased." Also a place name. In Zuo Tradition (Zuǒzhuàn), "Duke Zhao, Year 26", "Encamped above the dikes." The commentary states: "Dīshàng was a place in Zhou."
