According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to a garment that is not lined.
In the Book of Rites (Liji), Jade Pattern (Yuzao) section, it says: A single-layered garment serves as the base. The commentary explains: It consists of an outer garment without a lining.
In the Dialects (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong, it is stated that a sweaty under-jacket is sometimes referred to as a single-layered jacket.
In the History of the Former Han Dynasty (Qianhan Shu), Biography of Jiang Chong: Initially, when Chong was summoned to the Quantai Palace, he wore a single-layered robe of fine gauze. The commentary by Yan Shigu notes: The construction of a single-layered robe is similar to the inner garment worn under the formal court dress today.
