According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to reach the extreme or to exhaust.
In the Western Capital Rhapsody (Xidu Fu) by Ban Gu: All the beasts were frightened and exhausted.
Also, generally, anything that is finished or fully exhausted is called dan.
In the Master of Emptiness Rhapsody (Zixu Fu) by Sima Xiangru: Exhaustively witnessed the changes and conditions of people and objects.
In the Western Capital Rhapsody (Xijing Fu) by Zhang Heng: Exhaustively saw what had not been seen before.
Often written interchangeably with the character pronounced dan.
In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Zhou Hymns (Zhou Song): Exhausted their hearts.
In the Book of Rites (Liji), Meaning of Sacrifices (Jiyi): The year is already finished. These are all the same as dan.
