From the Jiyun, Yunhui, and Zhengxun rhyme dictionaries, pronounced ding deng qie, with a pronunciation similar to "dèng". The Shuowen Jiezi dictionary states it means to look up. Further, the Yupian dictionary indicates it refers to a steep mountain slope. In the Chronicles of the Son of Heaven (Tianzi Zhuan): "Thus, one crosses the treacherous slopes of Yuguan." And further: "The Son of Heaven returns south, ascending the steep slopes of Changsong." Additionally, the Guangyun dictionary states it refers to a ladder or steps. The Yupian dictionary notes it is sometimes also written in a variant form pronounced dēng. The Jiyun dictionary states it has the same meaning as two other characters, both pronounced dèng.
