Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): A stand for a candle. Xu Xuan says: It is a stand that holds a candle, hence it is called deng. The modern common character used is deng, which is incorrect.
Chu Ci (Chu ci): Beautiful lamps displayed in alternating order.
Liu Gonggan: Poem for the Official of the Five Offices: Bright lamps flashing with blazing light.
Also the name of a mountain.
Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): Mount Gudeng.
