Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili), Mourning Apparel: A rough mourning band. Commentary: A mourning band made of hemp cloth, worn on the head and tied around the waist, is called a die. The die on the head resembles a black cloth cap lacking a top ornament, while the die at the waist resembles a wide belt.
Book of Rites (Liji), Tan Gong: The meaning of die is to fill. Commentary: Used to express grief and sorrow.
Also, Zhou Rites (Zhouli), Spring Officials, Master of Ceremonies: For all matters of condolence, one must wear the bian-die style of attire. Commentary: A bian-die resembles a jue-bian cap but is plain in color, with a ring-shaped die attached.
