Pronounced dié
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a small melon.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Greater Odes (Daya): Continuing on like melon vines and their small fruits.
The Commentary (Zhuan) states: A small melon is a small gourd.
The Sub-commentary (Shu) states: There are two types of gourds. Large ones are called gua, and small ones are called dié. Melons growing on the vines near the roots are necessarily smaller than the large melons of the previous year; because they are small like a dié, they are called dié. Dié is another name for a small gourd (bó).
Pan Yue, Written at Huaixian: The melon vines grow long and the small fruits are wrapped.
