According to the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao), the eagle is similar to the falcon but larger in body, with a long tail and short wings, and is earthy yellow in color. Fu Qian states: The eagle is also called the vulture. Wei Zhao states: The eagle is also called the vulture. It is also written in a variant form. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), the eagle is the zhan (a type of raptor). The Classic of Birds (Qin Jing) states: The eagle attacks with its breast, the falcon (hu) uses its talons to grasp, the hawk (sun) strikes with its beak, the eagle beats with its wings, the vulture swoops to seize, and the zhan captures through fighting; these all describe the differences in their methods of attack. Li Shizhen states: Among the dark eagles, the most handsome and fierce is called the Haidongqing. According to the Rectification of Characters (Zhengzitong), it is colloquially known as the black eagle, and its feather shafts can be used for fletching arrows. Du Fu wrote the Rhapsody on the Eagle (Diao Fu), and Tao Jiucheng wrote the Biography of the Eagle (Diao Zhuan). Also, according to the Erya (Literary Expositor), the eagle is also called fuhe. The Classic of Birds (Qin Jing) states: When the pelican is on the shore, fish sink; when the fuhe (eagle) is on the shore, fish rise. Note: The eagle circles in the sky, attacks the swan, and eats it; when the feathers of an eagle are present in the grass, the feathers of other birds will fall out of their own accord. The bird recorded in the Erya is a different type of bird resembling a vulture.
