From the Tangyun rhyme dictionary, pronounced du deng qie. From the Jiyun, Yunhui, and Zhengxun rhyme dictionaries, pronounced ding deng qie, with a pronunciation similar to "dèng".
The Shuowen Jiezi dictionary states it means to look up.
Further, the Yupian dictionary indicates it refers to a steep mountain slope.
In the Chronicles of the Son of Heaven (Tianzi Zhuan): "Thus, one crosses the treacherous slopes of Yuguan." And further: "The Son of Heaven returns south, ascending the steep slopes of Changsong."
Additionally, the Guangyun dictionary states it refers to a ladder or steps.
The Yupian dictionary notes it is sometimes also written in a variant form pronounced dēng.
The Jiyun dictionary states it has the same meaning as two other characters, both pronounced dèng.
