Chen Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Tree (mù) Chu Kangxi strokes: 15 Page 550, Entry 08 Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) says pronunciation is hua; Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) says pronunciation is gua; sound is hua. Explaining Characters (Shuowen) states it is a type of tree. Its bark is used to wrap pine resin. Some write it with the wood radical and the character huo. Also, Tang Rhymes (Tangyun) records it as written as the character with the wood radical and the phonetic component chu. Pronounced chu. Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) say pronunciation is chu; sound is shu. It is a type of inferior tree. Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Bin, says: Gathering bitter vegetables, cutting down the chu tree for firewood. Lu Ji’s Commentary says: The chu tree, its trunk and bark both resemble the lacquer tree, the color is greenish-black, and the leaves have a foul odor. Zhuangzi, Free and Easy Wandering, says: I have a large tree, people call it the chu tree. Its trunk is swollen and gnarled, not conforming to the carpenter’s ink line. Its small branches are curled, not conforming to the compass and square. Tang Pharmacopoeia (Tang Bencao) says: The chun tree and the chu tree are similar in appearance; the wood of the chu tree is loose, while the wood of the chun tree is solid. Su Song’s Illustrated Classic (Tujing) says: The leaves of the chun tree are fragrant and edible. The chu tree has a foul odor; northerners call it mountain chun, while people in Jiangdong call it ghost eye. Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) says it is composed of the characters for hu and lv, with the same meaning. Also, Chuli is a place name. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Commentary (Suoyin), says: Gan Mao lived in Chuli, in the Yin district south of the Wei River, and was known as Master Chuli. Also, Erya, Interpretation of Insects, says: The insect known as the saji is also called the chuji. Also, Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) says pronunciation is tu; sound is shu. It is a type of inferior tree.
