According to the Tang Dynasty Rhymes (Tangyun), the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the Rhyme Meeting (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), the pronunciation is chu, sounding like chu.
According to the Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen), it means to extend or loosen. Also, chu-pu is a game. See the note under the plant radical for the character pu.
According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is sometimes written in a variant form (lu).
