According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means an accumulation of breath or energy. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it refers to a sound. It cites the Book of Odes (Shijing) saying, with a clanging and resonant sound. Note: In the current version of the Small Odes (Xiaoya) section of the Book of Odes (Shijing), this is written as a different character.

Originally written as a variant form (chen). It means anger. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also written as a variant form (chen). According to the Rhyme Treasury (Yunhui), this character was originally pronounced tian, and the pronunciation remained so until the Tang Dynasty. In modern times, it is commonly used as a character indicating anger or resentment.
