Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): The edge of a body of water.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wang: At the edge of the river.
Commentary: The term refers to the bank of a river.
Sub-commentary: Citing the Erya, it states: that which is flat above and deep below is called a chun. Guo Pu comments: where the bank is level on top and the water is deep below is called a chun.
Ji Yun: Sometimes written in a simplified variant form (zhen).
Textual Research: In the Book of Odes, Odes of Wang, at the edge of the river, the sub-commentary cites the Erya. The original text has been corrected to read that which is flat above and deep below is not called a chun, and the term has been updated accordingly.
