Pronounced chu (falling tone). According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is the same as the character for domestic animal (chu). The Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as the appearance of a pig walking with its feet shackled. Also, according to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced chu (falling tone). The meaning is the same. Sometimes also written in a variant form. The Rectification of the Six Writings (Liushu Zheng'e) states that the character form originates from the character for pig, with two feet tied, categorized as a self-explanatory character (zhishi). All characters such as those for chase (zhu) and carve (zhuo) utilize this radical.
