According to the Etymology of Characters (Shuowen), it means to rise. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is the yellow chang fish.
In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Xiaoya section: The fish are caught in the baskets, the chang and the sha. The Commentary says: The chang is the rising fish. The Sub-commentary says: The chang is also called the rising fish; these are two names for the same fish, though the Erya section on fish does not record this. Lu Ji’s commentary states: The chang is also known as the yellow-cheek fish. It resembles a swallow in head shape, has a horned body, and is thick, long, and large. Its cheek bones are truly yellow; it is a large and powerful fish capable of leaping. People in Xuzhou call it the rising fish. Yellow-cheek is the common name.
