Pronounced chan. Chan-yan means high. Zhengzitong states that it refers to mountains so steep and precipitous that they appear as if they were chiseled. Song Yu, High Tang Rhapsody (Gaotang fu): Ascending the steep, high peaks to gaze down. Zong Bing, Poem on Ascending Half-Stone Mountain: Ten thousand trees, steep and jagged, are strange.
Also, pronounced zhan. Same as zhan and zhan. Also used interchangeably with jian. Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes of the Kingdom (Xiaoya): The jagged rocks, they are indeed high. Commentary: Jian, pronounced zhan, means high and steep. Ji Yun says it is sometimes written as a variant. The common form chan is incorrect. Zong Bing, Poem on Ascending Half-Stone Mountain.
