According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), the term boleng refers to a type of vegetable.
According to the Commentary on the Materia Medica (Bencao Zhu), the Record of Pleasant Stories (Jiahualu) by Liu Yuxi states: The seeds for boleng originated in the Western Regions. A monk brought them over, claiming they were seeds from the Poling Kingdom, and the name was corrupted over time to become boleng. Li Shizhen states: According to the Institutional History of the Tang (Tang Huiyao), during the reign of Emperor Taizong of Tang, the Kingdom of Nepala presented the boleng vegetable, which resembles the safflower; this is that very vegetable.
