According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it denotes luxurious. Another meaning is a term for an old mother. Local customs refer to parents-in-law as father-in-law and mother-in-law.
In the customs of the Yao people in Guangxi, older men are addressed as mother by the entire village, while older women are addressed as father.
Huangpo is a deity. Those who practice nourishing life name it Huangpo, as it is able to mother and nourish the remaining organs.
Mengpo is a wind deity. Yang Shen states that Mengpo is a term from the entertainment districts of Bianjing during the Song dynasty, referring to the wind.
Bipo is a name for a lute, found in the Records of an Inquest into Spirits (Soushen Ji).
In Sanskrit, Jipo translates to the Heaven God of Longevity. Pinpo translates to forest or thicket. Upasaka translates to virtuous man. These are found in the Garden of Ancestors Encyclopedia (Zuting Shiyuan).
It is also the name of a country. The Shepo Kingdom is the same as the Java Kingdom; the Yuan dynasty sent Shi Bi to conquer it and appointed its ruler as the King of Java.
It is also the name of a city. Pengpo City is located in Tibet. Du Fu wrote the poem: Already recovered the Dibo garrison among the clouds, and further seized Pengpo City beyond the snow.
In the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is written as a variant form (pó).
