Page 783, Entry 30
Pronounced bo.
In the Explanation of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is defined as the piercing of the feet.
According to the Original Meaning of the Six Writings (Liushu Benyi), it represents the two feet spread apart, signifying the act of pushing or clearing something away.
In the Classic of the Origin of the Universe (Yuanbao Jing), it is written as north-bo-bo. The commentary states that this represents two people standing back to back. The note explains that north indicates back.
It also appears in the phrase gradual-walking-bo. The commentary states that this indicates the feet are in motion. The note explains that walking refers to the feet, and bo refers to movement.
The Collection of Characters (Zihui) states that it is composed of two stop radicals placed back to back, forming the image of separating or spreading. It is sometimes incorrectly written in the variant forms bo or bo.
