As defined in the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to bind or tie. In the Book of Master Mo (Mozi), Chapter on Elevating Equality (Shangtong Pian), it is written: Yu was buried at Kuaiji in a coffin of paulownia wood three inches thick, bound with creepers. Also, as recorded in the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), it refers to the swaddling clothes of an infant. In the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), Annals of Emperor Xuan, it is written: Although the great-grandson was still in his swaddling clothes. The commentary by Yan Shigu states: The term qiang refers to what is now called a child's swaddling cloth.
