Pharmacopoeia (Bencao): Also called banmao, found everywhere. It is five or six tenths of an inch long, with yellow feet and mottled markings, a bird-like abdomen, and a pointed beak.
Divine Husbandman's Classic of Materia Medica (Shennong Bencao Jing) states: In spring it eats daphne flowers and is called yuanqing; in summer it eats kudzu flowers and is called tingzhang; in autumn it eats bean flowers and is called banmao; in winter it enters the earth and is called didan.
