According to the Compendium of Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Collection of Rhymes (Yunhui), the pronunciation is biao. According to the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), the pronunciation is biao. It means to weed a field. It means to remove grass. From the Zuo Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals (Zuozhuan): Like a farmer, weeding and piling earth around the roots. Also, according to the Collection of Rhymes (Yunhui), it is used interchangeably with biao. From the Book of Odes (Shijing), Zhou Hymns: Continuous is the weeding. The commentary states: Weeding without cease. Also, according to the Compendium of Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced pao. Piao is the appearance of grain that is sparse. Also pronounced jiao. The meaning is the same.
